IMO the single best upgrade for a computer or laptop is a solid-state hard drive (SSD) currently traditional hard drive are the main bottle neck in computers as the CPU has to wait until the hard drive serves the data to the cpu can process it. Sorry if that's too technical but bottom line it will make your computer noticable faster, more then any other upgrade you can do. Of course there are exceptions, if you're computer is older then 5 years old or if you're still running a single-core processer then a new computer would be the way to go.
